Portuguese Pointer
The Perdiguero du Borgos is
better known as the Portuguese pointer whose name is derived from ' perdigon',
the Portuguese word for partridge. It is thought that the breed descended from
dogs used by Portuguese falconers in the 5th & 6th centuries. It is sometimes
referred to as the Spanish pointer and the proximity of Portugal and Spain on
the Iberian Peninsula is likely to be the reason for the confusion in country of
origin.
Like many European gundogs it is a
hunt, point and retrieve breed with the main quarry being the partridges that
thrive particularly well in the heat of Portugal and Spain. While it is a
Portuguese breed, most examples were found in Spain, possible giving credibility
to it being a Spanish breed. Indeed, the breed was virtually wiped out during
the Spanish Civil War.
